ACTIVITY CURTAILED

by Michael Newman

A gossip of women's feet
Across the pavement
Eventually drains
Down the gutter. Floodwater.

After which,
The far-away sound of planes
Helps unwind
The spools of memory.

This could be cinema,
Here in England.
The reality is war:
Footage of children
Scratching the sand with sticks,
The flies reaching
Unsympathetic resonance
In the Middle Key of F,
And the sky pumped-up
With wish fulfilment.

All the while,
Here in England,
The B-52s prepare
For Endgame.
