Sepia photographs taken long ago
Bringing to life those days of yesteryear.
Smiling faces that often do not show
The hardships endured and sadness or fear.

The first world war, barbaric and so fierce
Each forward step a battle lost or won.
People back home were sometimes moved to tears
Their loved ones whose lives were ruled by a gun.

Posing in their uniforms proud and tall
Although gone from this time to another
One look at their faces and we recall
Those solemn moments will live forever.

Snapshots are what we remember them by
For in those pictures they will never die.
