David, 1961

by Colin Fisher

I like my mum’s photos.
She can capture movement
That for me would simply be a
Blur. The best photos of us
As children are of things
Being done. Me, or at least
My foot; the scooter, diagonal
Across the photo. I had jumped,
Or swung. That photo was of the
Thing done, the bit that said
This was it, the thing you have seen.
Or the one of David,
Climbing, clambering, his hands
In or on (I’ve only seen this
Photo once) but doing, being
David. Or,
In a print, better to say:
A David, shorts and a knitted top,
In a photo taken by a mother
In 1961.
