Dress

by Ting Hway Wong

I was buying a dress
Nice colour Good cut
Embroidered detail but not too much
The salesman found my size
Fitted like it was made for me
The fabric smooth on my skin
I paid with my credit card
Signed the chit

They had just wrapped it up
When my friend called me on my mobile phone
To say

She has cancer
They have to operate
Cut it out
Weren’t sure her skin would cover the hole left behind
Might need to patch some skin from her thigh

I carried the bag with my dress inside
Out of the shop
Wishing I had not bought it

Strange logic
I told myself
As if not buying the dress
Might have changed the fact
That my friend has
Cancer.
