In their dreams

by Christina Raven

A child dreamt

of dancing, of running,
graceful and swift.

Lovers dreamt

of slow intricate caresses,
delighting in pleasures given
and pleasures received.

The farmer watched and waited
for the sowing, for the harvest,

while the sleeping artist sought
the reality beyond the vision.

Their lives have been tossed into pain and chaos

by brutal amputation,
by random acts of cruelty;

for no-one had thought

to dream of a prosthetic future.
