SONNET FOR SARAJEVO
by
HARLOW, UK
They lived in harmony their peaceful lives:
Croat, Serb, Bosnian neighbours, for years
helping each other through difficult times,
sharing joys and together shedding tears.
Although their religions were different
they always offered neighbourly support;
when children were born they were all content
to share happiness and help hold the fort.
Until Milošević began the war,
inciting unrest, making war extend,
Karađić commanded Serbian corps
to kill all Croat and Bosnian friends.
At last peace reigns in the region once more
Let’s hope this means the true end of the war!
