The Wail of the Azan

by Janmejoy Gupta

On a cloudy morning,
The sound of the Azaan
wafts to my ears,
I sit in my small cubicle,
The wail of the Azan…..
Five times a day,
Come the wails,
Allah hu Akbar, la ilaha
illallaha, Allah hu Akbar.
It gives me sustenance,
It gives me strength.
I admire their faith,
I draw inspiration,
To help me through,
Another day in this
 treacherous world.

It’s noon,
Time for the second Azaan.

- Allah! A cry for the Lord,
A call for the devout to pray,
It’s Friday – the special day,
The special namaz….
The noon time refuge for
believers.

It’s  six’o’ clock,
Time to close for the day,
Time to go back home…
The shadows lengthen,
I pack my bag,
The wails of the Azaan,
Reach a Crescendo,
Allah! A cry for the Lord,
A call for the devout to
come for namaz-

Allah hu Akbar, la ilaha
illallaha, Allah hu Akbar.
