Entry - MAG Poetry Prize 2010

through the walls.

by Olivia Head

we hear them
through the walls
laughing
and clapping
the patter of small feet
belonging to small people
with blonde bowlcuts
and skin like rose petals
and minds which do not yet understand.
and we sit together
(our side of the wall)
in silence
listening.          listening and
knowing
that it is good.
that, even though the crops may fail to grow
the sun may forget to shine
the frost may crack the ground
and that the heart may break,
that life
(and love and laughter)
must go on.
and that the sun
may shine again
new seasons
may bring new crops
the frost
may thaw
and
that the heart may mend over time.
as we sit
listening
we pray that it may happen
for them.
