Subconscious Rising

by Shona Hicks

I didn't want to close my eyes
Darkness lurked over me, breathing
a heavy silence,
whispering a gentle yet insane truth
I felt all peace slip away into the blackness
I was exposed, alone, panic chilled the air
Vulnerable I listened, as a deep sadness engulfed me
Despair revealing itself
armed with memories of tragic mistakes
that spoke one by one
Condemning,punishing,crucifying.
Tears of hopelessness streamed my face
Holding onto faint thoughts of those
I loved, determination carried me,
Lifting me above horrid pits of self destruction.
Blackness now emptiness.
Staring into the unpredictable calm
Almost safe, Almost trusting, I closed my eyes.
