Ascension

by Chloe Whybrew

Tonight
my soul is filled
with the nothingness that is
the answer to all my questions.

         I am poised here, hovering

on inexplicable comprehension, like a seabird
trapped in the eye of a storm. Insatiable, I have feasted on life,
greedy for the taste of possibilities; the disappointment of achievement,
the torture of emotion, the inky poison of words. I, like all the others, am an
awkward angel who with broken wings must always try to reach the gates of Heaven . But
tonight, my fingers have touched, with something like divinity, that absence which marks the boundary

of my sight. For a moment – for a trembling second – I am here and flooded with a nameless fear of the fall

that will shatter my soul

                 into

                                a

                                            thousand

                                                              pieces.
