Entry - MAG Poetry Prize 2010

by Mukhtar Tijani

Never too young to die
Yes, that's what they told me
I find it hard to show emotion
Yes, that's what the war did to me

Watched comrades bleed to death
And some explode into thin dust
My emotion has been cremated
All I do is shoot to kill any enemy on sight

It's been a 371 days, 3 hours, 24 minutes, 56 seconds since I saw my wife
I miss her, the love of my life
That tender sweetness of her skin and her beautiful eyes
How I long to see and feel her

And to my little prince, who shall never lead a life of strife
He shall go to school and discover his gift
He shall learn the rules and eventually make the rules
He shall become a great achiever and raise a family

If you do get a telegram for me
Don't cry or lose yourself in agony,
Cherish the sweet short memories we shared
Don't be sad that I died, be happy that I lived

And please never forget, I love you
