“ Mermaid “

by Donald Falconer

You are the stranded mermaid of my dreams
who sits in the dry desert of my mind
contemplating water. Liquid sadness beams
through your eyes like unhappy stars lost behind
the moon, or through the suns evaporating
rays. You have not soaked your tail for an age
through the cool blue waves or quenched your waiting
in the wonder of the sea. Only the blank page
and the dormant volcano know the true
extent of your longing and secret desire,
you mask beautifully without a clue.
A human form burns with a sensual fire!
So take my blood warm, red and full of art
and soak your scales through the seas of my heart.

It is refreshing to find a well-executed sonnet! Lovely alliteration in the last line, and altogether a powerful image.
