The Magnetic Donkey
by
Dublin, Ireland
Among the space debris in memory’s field
You caught the light, your plastic smile intact
With all the mystery of your simple act,
That lifelike stubbornness that so appealed,
For I had done the same not long ago,
Turning my face from any swooping spoon
That offered the proverbial carrot – soon
You took it with you where all good things go.
Now you draw other long-lost travellers near,
Dim in borrowed light they join in the play,
The scenes of joy before fate moulded us
In moments when we turned our lips away
Or kissed, and took a holiday from fear,
Our magnetism both our storm and compass.
