Never Surrender

by Beth Rees

Sometimes I think
This heart of mine
Must be strong
When I feel weak
This steady beat
Carries on
The eternal drum
Of the earth pulse
Of patter of rain
Again and again
Pulls me from the rock
My grip unlocked
But no current
Nor eddy
Nor wave
Fills my lungs
To leave me sunk
Like a diver I rise
Visions in my eyes
Of dark hidden places
On the ocean floor.

Though the water's
Weight bears down
This little heart
Never surrenders.
