Out there somewhere

by chang anthony

I know you are
out there somewhere
gazing into the vast
endless firmament.
A spotlight
just like me
probing the infinite darkness
for that miniscule needle.
One needle looking
for another needle
In the same firmament haystack.
I meet your gaze
from where I am
a billion years later
not knowing if you are still
out there somewhere
or still searching
for me
or someone else.
Forgive me
If you should see me
return your gaze
another billion years later.
We are star-crossed
misaligned in the maze
of sweeping corridors
and weeping walls
in the infinite firmament
of love.

Judges' comments on this poem

I love the imagery, that the distance between us can feel like that between celestial bodies light years apart. It just needs concentrating.
