Coming Home From The Mill (Inspired by the painting 'Coming Home From The Mill' by L.S.Lowry)

by Chris Fordham

Out into the streets they flood,
a torrent of hustle and bustle
at the call of a whistle.
The end of a day.

Spilling onto the wide roads
of the grey, two-dimensional town
they keep their eyes to the ground,
reflecting on life,

what it is to live here now.
The struggle, the strife of city life
to live a wage beside a
soot pouring smokestack.

No break granted from the murk,
even the sky has no colour now.
We are slaves to this new age.
But it could be worse.
