The Fall

by Simon Ramanauskas

Forsythia yellow, lilac violet, and apple
Blossom from spring chorale, crescendo
To summer largo of emerald green.

Colour retreats to murky
Brown in gloomy
Diminuendo.

Bare serpent branches
Twist to the sky;
Cold, creaking,
Exposed.

Sampled fruits of wisdom,
Rot upon spoiled land,
They too pay the price;
Perennial punishment
Of the damned
