Fractured

by Vivien Hampshire

I am alone somewhere and lost, until
in darkness, like insistent autumn rain,
they drip
in chilled unmeasured doses,
between the open spaces of my brain.

Memories, so uncertain, spill,
confusing love and loss with held-back hate,
nudging
through the cloudy cobwebbed claws
that have already sealed my fragile fate.

At every turn, a cul-de-sac, a hill,
a creeping fog to shroud a fractured mind,
my past
a book of blank un-numbered pages,
full of all the words I cannot find.
