Battle Hymn

by Kim Lofthouse

Black.

Black and red.

A swastika,
A hellish light
Inside my head.

It's raining.

Pouring down.

Splish-splash,
Splish-splash,
Splish-splash

Onto crimson ground
Of battles fought
And lost.
Of sweet young men
Bought and sold.

This sense of dread
That burns
And drips
And sings
Inside my head.

This is a song.
An ode.

To you, my dear.

As I fall down
To perfect black
And dripping red.

No more alive.

Only dead.
