What if these folk woke up

by Kathryn Nixon

from the medium of paint
and canvas?
Clueless as to why
they had gathered here,
would they find ways
to form friendships
with their lonely neighbours,
invent gestures of greeting,
touch their first ever hands
at least in parting,
and find their paths home
through the streets of Salford
back to families and firesides?

And if they did,
what if they could
tell the artist how?

Clever!

What a gently intriguing poem, which demands re-reading. There are examples of carefully selected verbs here: 'gathered', 'invent', 'touch'.

a clever idea.
