Entry - MAG Poetry Prize 2011

by Adrienne Frances

old-world cuckoo
just enough charm to manipulate
this parasite into my nest

it grows.  dark ideas sprout forth
and blacken my brood,
make black my mind

(implied delicacy overwhelms
any sense of propriety -
I lose myself)

embrace his thickened shell
it repels my heat, repels my touch, my need,
I cradle the cracks that develop

nurture the birth of something unpleasant
damaging, a one-sided love
I'm wrung out in it's wake
