Entry - MAG Poetry Prize 2011

by Daniel Crate

I have been piano
I have been drum
I have been an orchestra
I have been numb
I have been an ice cube
a river a stick
a waterfall
tiny tooth pic
I have been an elephant
a panda or two
storybook picture
winnie the pooh
I have been the wind
a willow a bee
the liberation bell
that set the jews free
a protractor
a stencil
a copy cat
I have been Hitler
wooden door mat
a lyric a poem
a spider a crook
written words in
a classroom book
been the sun
the north and the east
the innocent ghost
the devilish beast
the rain the snow
the hail the fog
the 5am moon
in the city smog
I’ve been a number on official list
I’ve been more, much more than this

Judges' comments on this poem

Loved the beginning but for me I didn't get the ending. I was expecting more of a revelation. Didn't get it I'm afraid.
