Unrest

by Rachel Irven

Khaled wears sunglasses.
My worried face reflected in their blackness.
He is young,
Youth seeping from the edges of
His air of authority
Like the curly hair escaping from
His baseball cap.

He explains very carefully,
There is passion in his voice,
Though he is controlling it,
His fluttering hands emphasize,
Never still.
He is being professional
Holding things together
Emotions tamped down.

I watch, murmur platitudes
Concerned for him, for us,
Try to make sense of reports, rumours.

The river seems still
Watching us under a blue blue sky.
A plume of smoke rises over the island.

Love this, but 3rd line is extra. 2nd verse ‘He explains…emphasize’ says it all, next three lines are extra. Cut commas on end of lines
