it is like the flowers

by Violet White

it is like

collecting wild flowers
on the first day
of Spring;

sun in
a morning sky
warming your back,

you bend your whole weight
into the slight fragrance
of their rebellion

for who has despised
the day of small things?

these, tiny, stood up to be counted;
defiant, have shaken their wings,
lifted their heads to reply;

others will follow;
they will break through in bands,
transforming the landscape;

together they will make a way
for the face of the earth
to be altered;

they will be known as
renowned for their rising;

in their time people will laugh,
surprised to see such
loveliness spreading;

looking ahead, the days
will open their hours to the light,
nights will be short;

they will, in the end, lie down,
but not till their seed has
caught in our hearts

and we will still remember them
when days are, again,
